Bangladesh

Bangladesh flag

The background color symbolizes the greenery of Bangladesh with its vitality and youthfulness while the red disc represents the rising sun and the sacrifice the people made to obtain their independence.

February 21, in Bangla, “Ekushey”, refers to February 21, 1952, the day that students demonstrated against the forcible imposition of Urdu as the national language of then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). As Bangla was the language of the majority, the sympathies of the entire nation were with the students. Group after group was put under arrest. In the afternoon, the police opened fire, killing three students. The liberation war flowed from the language movement. Bangla was eventually recognized as the state language, even before the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

Today, nations across the world also join Bangladesh to observe the day as the “International Mother Language Day”.

The day is a public holiday and the national flag is flown at half-mast at all government and private buildings. Bangladesh commemorates Shaheed Debash (Ekushey February) as martyrs’ day with due solemnity as they recall the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives for establishing the right to speak in Bangla.

In 2003, the UN declared February 21 as “Mother Tongue Day” as an international comemmoration. With so many indigenous languages disappearing throughout the world, the lessons of Ekushey are universally important.

I have not come, where endless patches of blood glow
Like so many fiery flowers, to weep.
Today I am not overwhelmed by grief.
Today I am not maddened by anger.
Today I am only unflinching in my determination.

—From “First Poem on Ekushey,” by Mahbub Ul Alam Chowdhury)

Bangladesh flag

The first flag of the independence movement.

Initially, the flag had a map of Bangladesh in gold at the center of the red circle. On the March 3, 1971, ASM Abdur Rab, the then Vice President of Dhaka University Students’ Union, hoisted the flag for the first time at the historic Dhaka University location known as bawt-tawla. The flag was also raised at the then Ramna Racecourse (now a park renamed as Shuhrawardy Uddayan) when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman gave his historic speech proclaiming “this struggle is the struggle for liberation”.

The flag was created by Quamrul Hasan, a painter, and the construction of the flag required several months to complete. Unique features of the first flag of independent Bangladesh were the absence of the crescent and star (as in the Pakistan’s flag), symbol of the Islamic states. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Bangalees strived to have a secular state

The red circular disc with map of Bangladesh symbolizes the blood of thousands of Bangalis killed by the Pakistanis since 1947 in the Golden Bangla. The green backdrop, needless to say, symbolizes the vitality, youthfulness, greenery; and, of course, it symbolizes Bangladesh as an agrarian land since the pre-Vedic age. Many western writers have written an interpretation of the green backdrop of the Bangladesh flag as the color of Islam which is essentially a misinterpretation made by people who are not Bangladees.

The four stars represent nationalism, socialism, democracy, and secularism; the plant between the two groups of stars is a sprig of jute; the plant in the middle of the emblem is a “shapla” (winter or water lily) on stylized waves. The waves symbolize rivers emphasizing the national transportation network. A wreath of “padi” rice is surrounding the “shapla”.

Bouvet Island

Bouvet Island flag

This island is the territory of Norway that is administered by the Polar Department of the Ministry of Justice and Police from Oslo so the flag of Norway is used as the flag of the island.

Bouvet Island is located near Southern Africa in the South Atlantic Ocean, south-southwest of the Cape of Good Hope. This uninhabited volcanic island is almost entirely covered by glaciers and is difficult to approach. It was discovered in 1739 by a French naval officer after whom the island was named. No claim was made until 1825 when the British flag was raised. In 1928, the UK waived its claim in favor of Norway, which had occupied the island the previous year. In 1971, Bouvet Island and the adjacent territorial waters were designated a nature reserve. Since 1977, Norway has run an automated meteorological station on the island.
